National Standards Years 1 and 2
The pages in this book are designed to support the New Zealand Mathematics Curriculum, the New Zealand Mathematics Standards and the New Zealand Numeracy Programme.
After 1 year at school, students should be achieving at Level 1 of the New Zealand Curriculum. Year 1 of the Mathematics Curriculum is focused mainly on number and the manipulation of small numbers. Students should be able to count to 10 and add, subtract and multiply numbers with totals up to 10. They should also be able to recognise shapes and compare lengths areas and capacities. Finally, they should be able to follow or give directions forward, back, turn left and turn right.
After 2 years at school students will still be achieving at Level 1 however they should be able to count and manipulate numbers to 100. They should be able to continue number patterns based on ones, twos, fives and tens. They should also be able to compare different measures, complete simple transformations and represent simple statistical data in categories.
For a complete learning sequence at Years 1 and 2 then parents and teachers should purchase Mighty Maths Beginner Mathematician for 4-6 year olds and Mighty Maths Developing Mathematician for 5-7 year olds. These books are available from the Mahobe Resources website.
You can be confident that you are covering all the right work when you use Mighty Maths. -
Part 1, Introducing Numbers
Part 1 introduces children to the concept of counting and writing the numbers 1 to 10. After completing these sheets children will be able to recognise and write each of these numbers and use them for counting objects. If your child needs extra tuition then they should work through Mahobe’s red ‘Beginner Mathematics’ series: Book 1, “Lets Learn to Count”. The book is from the Mighty Maths Red 4-6 year old series and is available from Whitcoulls. -
Part 2, Introducing More Numbers
Part 2 encourages children to count small numbers of objects and then moves on to bigger numbers up to 20. From these sheets children will recognise how some numbers are larger or smaller than others. Many students enter school without being able to count or recognise numbers. These free sheets will help give your child a head start in mathematics. -
Part 3, Introducing Addition and Subtraction
Part 3 encourages children to learn addition and subtraction. These pages are ideally used as a stand alone module of work or used alongside Mahobe’s red ‘Beginner Mathematics’ series: Book 2, “Lets Use Numbers” and Book 3, “Addition and Subtraction are Easy”. This series will help give them a real head start when they start school or will move them up a level as the pages will help consolidate the work already being learnt in class. The Mighty Maths Red series is for 4-6 year olds and is available from Whitcoulls. -
Part 4, Introducing Multiplication and Division
Part 4 introduces the concept of multiplication having the students describe numbers of objects, and grouping them. These pages are ideally used after working through Mahobe’s red ‘Beginner Mathematics’ series, especially Book 4, “Multiplication and Division are Fun”. These books are available from Whitcoulls and are for 4-6 year olds. This series is really fun to use and will give them a real head start when they start school or will move them ahead of others as the pages will help consolidate the work being learnt in class. -
Part 1, Lets Learn Shapes
Part 1 introduces a number of other topics that are important in mathematics such as drawing graphs and shapes. However there are also excellent practise sheets on counting and ordering numbers. The first three parts of this series is ideally used by 5-7 year olds alongside Mahobe’s yellow “Developing Mathematician” series of books. These books are a lot of fun to use and will give your child a head start at school. They are available from Whitcoulls. -
Part 2, Lets Learn Numbers
Part 2 is concerned with counting numbers up to 20 and writing them in order. This topic is introduced in a number of interesting but different ways to help consolidate the concept. These pages are ideally used by 5 - 7 year olds alongside Mahobe’s yellow “Developing Mathematician” series of books. This series will help move them up a level as working through the pages will consolidate the work already being learnt in class. The books are available from Whitcoulls. -
Part 3, Lets Learn Simple Arithmetic
Part 3 is helps consolidate the arithmetic concepts of addition and subtraction with many different and interesting examples to practise on. These pages are ideally used by 5 - 7 year olds alongside Mahobe’s yellow “Developing Mathematician” series of books. Working through the series will consolidate the work already being learnt in class or will introduce them to work being covered later in the year. This means that they will have a head start on others in the class. The yellow Developing Mathmatician series is available at Whitcoulls. -
Part 4, Lets Learn Bigger Numbers
Part 4 starts work on numbers between 20 and 100, what they mean and how to write them. These pages are ideally used by 6 - 8 year olds alongside Mahobe’s blue “Advancing Mathematician” series of books. This series will help move them up a level as working through the pages will consolidate the work already being learnt in class. The Mighty Maths blue series is fun to use and is available at Whitcoulls. -
Part 5, Lets Learn Harder Arithmetic
Part 5 introduces addition and subtraction of numbers between 0 and 100. It also teaches how addition and multiplication are related. A number of these pages are found in Mahobe’s blue “Advancing Mathematician” series of books. They are ideally used by 6 – 8 year olds. Working through the series will consolidate the work already being learnt in class or will introduce them to work being covered later in the year. This means that they will have a head start on others in the class. The Mighty Maths blue series is available at Whitcoulls. -
Part 6, Lets Learn Multiplication
Part 6 has children starting learning the multiplication tables but also relates each to the products to different examples. It then shows how multiplication and addition are related to division. A number of these pages are found in Mahobe’s blue “Advancing Mathematician” series of books. They are ideally used by 7 – 8 year olds. This series will help move them to the next level, as working through the pages will consolidate the work already being learnt in class. The Mighty Maths Blue series for 6 - 8 year olds is available at Whitcoulls. -
The Whizz Kids Worksheets
Mighty Maths is a structured series of workbooks written by New Zealand's premier mathematics author Kim Freeman. This is the first book in the Mighty Maths series for 9 - 12 year olds. Inside this book there are 30 pages of basic number work. Students should try and complete one sheet per session then plot their progress on the graph at the back of the book. The pages are fun and reinforce and supplement what is being covered at school. -
Working With Numbers
Mighty Maths is a structured series of workbooks written by New Zealand's premier mathematics author Kim Freeman. This is the second book in the 9-12 year olds series. It is primarily concerned with number work to help students develop a better understanding of and skill with numbers. After working through these fun pages, students will have gained in confidence in both mental arithmetic and the use of a calculator. -
Stepping Up to Harder Numbers
Mighty Maths is a structured series of workbooks written by New Zealand's premier mathematics author Kim Freeman. This is the third book in the 9-12 year olds series which covers all strands of the NZ Mathematics Curriculum.
